Arusha National Park is a compact yet remarkably diverse wildlife sanctuary located just 25 kilometers east of Arusha city in northern Tanzania. Despite its relatively small size, the park offers an astonishing variety of landscapes and ecosystems, making it one of the most scenic and accessible parks in the country. It serves as a perfect introduction to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit and is ideal for day trips or short excursions.
The park is dominated by three distinct geographical features: Mount Meru, the Ngurdoto Crater, and the Momella Lakes. Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak, rises dramatically from the park’s western edge and offers a challenging but rewarding trekking experience. Its slopes are covered in lush montane forests, home to colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of bird species. The Ngurdoto Crater, often referred to as “Little Ngorongoro,” is a steep-walled volcanic caldera filled with swampy grasslands and frequented by buffaloes, warthogs, and waterbucks. Meanwhile, the Momella Lakes shimmer in pastel hues and attract thousands of flamingos and other waterbirds, creating a vibrant spectacle for birdwatchers.
Wildlife in Arusha National Park is abundant and varied, though it differs from the typical Big Five experience found in larger parks. Giraffes are particularly numerous, often seen gracefully moving across the open plains. Other commonly spotted animals include zebras, bushbucks, dik-diks, and baboons. The park is also a haven for birdlife, boasting over 400 recorded species ranging from colorful turacos to majestic eagles.
One of the park’s most appealing features is the opportunity for walking safaris and canoeing—activities rarely permitted in other Tanzanian parks. Walking safaris allow visitors to explore the forested slopes and crater rims on foot, offering a more intimate connection with nature. Canoeing on the Momella Lakes provides a tranquil way to observe flamingos and other aquatic birds up close, all while surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
